UHF call signs on Australian mining and civil worksites

Every mine site, large civil works site, and major infrastructure project in Australia uses UHF radio for communication between plant operators, site supervisors, and traffic controllers. When a new worker, visitor, or contractor arrives on site, they need to know which channel to monitor — and they need to know it before they interact with any plant or vehicle.

A UHF call sign delivers that information at the point where it is needed: at the site entry, alongside other mandatory site information, where it can be read before the person is on site.

Why UHF call signs matter for safety

On a mine haul road or a large construction site, the primary method of communicating between a truck driver and a worker on the ground is radio — specifically, the UHF citizen's band (CB) radio channel designated for that site. Without radio communication:

  • Plant operators cannot warn pedestrians of approaching movements
  • Traffic controllers cannot coordinate between opposing ends of a single-lane haul road
  • Emergency communications are delayed

A contractor who arrives without knowing the site's UHF channel is effectively communication-blind until they are told in person. In a high-traffic, high-plant environment, that window of ignorance is a safety risk.

The UHF call sign removes this gap. It is one of the first pieces of information a person needs on any site where radio communication is used.

Where UHF call signs are placed

UHF call signs are typically placed:

  • At all site entry points — vehicles and pedestrians see the channel before they enter
  • At traffic management control points — where drivers are stopped for direction, they can note the channel
  • At haul road intersections — where radio communication is critical for safe merging and crossing
  • At shift change areas — where incoming workers report

On large sites with multiple operational zones using different channels (e.g. the open cut pit on channel 5, the workshop area on channel 2), zone-specific UHF signs at the entry to each zone allow operators to adjust their radio without returning to the main entry.

Standard and custom UHF call sign formats

A standard UHF call sign typically displays:

  • "UHF Ch." followed by the channel number
  • Sometimes the site name or operator name
  • Sometimes the emergency channel (channel 40 is the CB emergency channel in Australia)

Standard stock signs are available for the most commonly used channels (5, 8, 11, 40, etc.). For sites using non-standard channels or requiring the sign to carry additional information (site name, multiple channels), custom signs are manufactured to order.

Materials for mining and civil environments

Mine sites and large civil worksites are among the harshest environments for signage. UHF call signs in these environments should be:

  • Aluminium — lightweight but robust, corrosion-resistant
  • UV-stable printing — essential for signs that face direct sun in Australian conditions

On most large sites, the UHF call sign is one component of a site entry sign board that also displays:

  • Principal contractor name and emergency contact
  • Mandatory PPE requirements
  • Site access and visitor sign-in requirements
  • Speed limit on internal roads
  • Emergency muster point location

Frequently asked questions

Which UHF channel should a mine site use? The choice of operating channel depends on the frequency of use in the local area, coordination with adjacent sites, and the specific radio system in use. Channels 1–8 and 41–48 are duplex repeater channels in Australia. Channel 40 is the road users' emergency and calling channel. Most mine sites use a simplex channel from the CB band, selected in coordination with their radio equipment supplier and neighbouring operations.

Do we need a UHF call sign if we have digital radio (DMR) on site? If your site uses digital radio rather than UHF CB, a "radio channel" sign identifying the relevant talk group or channel on the digital system serves the same purpose. The principle is the same — incoming workers need to know how to communicate.

Can I use the same UHF channel as a neighbouring site? Using the same channel as an adjacent site creates the risk of cross-site radio communication that could cause confusion or missed calls in safety-critical situations. Coordination with neighbouring operators to use separate channels is standard practice on large mine developments.
