Standard flat sheet signs work well in sheltered indoor environments. But put a flat sheet sign on a mine site entry, a construction perimeter fence, or an exposed outdoor wall in regional Australia, and within months you may have a warped, faded, billowing sign that no longer does its job. Boxed edge signs exist to solve this problem.

The boxed edge — a folded metal perimeter that wraps around all four sides of the sign — gives the panel structural rigidity without a separate backing frame. The result is a sign that stays flat, stays legible, and stays fixed in conditions that destroy cheaper alternatives.

A boxed edge sign is manufactured by folding the edges of an aluminium sheet back on itself to create a rectangular channel on all four sides. This folded edge:

  • Eliminates the sharp exposed edges that standard cut sheet creates
  • Provides a fixing point for mounting hardware without compromising the sign face
  • Adds significant rigidity without substantially increasing weight

The result is a sign that is significantly more durable than a flat sheet of the same material, and that maintains its appearance over a much longer service life in exposed conditions.

When to use boxed edge signs

Boxed edge signs are the appropriate choice when:

  • The sign is larger than A3 — large flat sheets flex and bow; boxed edge maintains flatness at large format
  • The installation is exposed to wind — particularly on perimeter fences, site boundaries, and open outdoor locations
  • The service life required is long — permanent or semi-permanent installations that should not need to be replaced for several years
  • Appearance and professionalism matter — a flat, crisp boxed edge sign presents better than a warped sheet

Standard safety sign content on boxed edge format

Boxed edge signs can carry any AS/NZS 1319 safety sign content — danger, warning, mandatory, no entry, fire safety, or any other format. The boxed edge is the construction method, not a sign category. The content follows the same standards as any other sign type.

For site entry signs that carry multiple pieces of information (site name, principal contractor, emergency contact, PPE requirements), the larger format that boxed edge construction enables is practical — it allows all the required information to be displayed at an appropriate legibility distance without compromising any individual element.

Mounting options

Boxed edge signs can be mounted by:

  • Chain or cable — passing through holes drilled in the top edge, hanging from a structure or fence
  • Bolts or screws — through holes in the sign face or edge
  • Post mounting — bolted to a sign post via the edge channel
  • Slotted edge — factory-fabricated slots in the edge channel for cable or rod mounting

Specify the mounting method when ordering so the appropriate fixing provision can be incorporated during manufacture.

Aluminium vs galvanised steel

Most boxed edge safety signs are manufactured from aluminium: lighter, corrosion-resistant without additional treatment, and suitable for most environments. For applications where the sign will be in contact with dissimilar metals, coastal salt environments, or chemical splash, discuss the specific requirements with the supplier.

Galvanised steel boxed edge signs are available for applications requiring greater impact resistance, but the added weight must be considered in the mounting design.

Are boxed edge signs more expensive than standard flat signs? Yes, the manufacturing process is more involved. For large-format outdoor installations where the alternative is replacing a flat sheet sign every 12–18 months, the total cost of ownership of a boxed edge sign over its service life is typically lower.

Can boxed edge signs be retrospectively applied to existing sign content? If you have an existing sign that is warping or bowing, the solution is generally to re-manufacture the sign in boxed edge format. Retrofitting a boxed edge to an existing sign is not practical.

Do boxed edge signs comply with AS/NZS 1319? Compliance with AS/NZS 1319 relates to the sign content (colour, format, symbols, text) not the construction method. A boxed edge sign with AS/NZS 1319 compliant content is a compliant sign.
