Fire safety signs are a legal requirement in every commercial and industrial workplace in Australia. Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and associated codes of practice, fire fighting equipment, alarm points, and emergency exits must all be clearly identified with compliant signage.
What fire safety signs do you need?
Australian workplaces are required to display fire safety signage wherever fire fighting equipment is located, including fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire blankets, and fire alarm call points. Emergency exit routes and assembly areas must also be signed with compliant emergency information signs.
AS/NZS 1319 compliance
Fire safety signs in Australia must comply with AS/NZS 1319, the Australian and New Zealand Standard for safety signs in the occupational environment. The standard specifies red and white as the correct colour format for fire equipment signs, and green and white for emergency information and exit signs. Non-compliant signs can result in improvement notices from WorkSafe inspectors.
