Why lithium battery fires are different
The defining feature is thermal runaway: heat inside a cell triggers a chain reaction that generates more heat, which can lead to smoke, intense heat, fire, explosion and re-ignition. Once it starts, the fire is hard to control and can reignite even after the visible flames are out. That is what sets it apart from ordinary combustible, liquid-fuel and electrical fires.
The honest part: standard extinguishers have limits
This is the bit that matters most. A standard CO2 or ABE dry chemical extinguisher is not a reliable way to stop a lithium battery fire in thermal runaway. They can help control surrounding or secondary fires, the materials catching alight around the battery, but they do not address the runaway itself.
For the battery, the right answer is specialised lithium battery fire protection, purpose-built agents and equipment designed to cool the cells and tackle the runaway, along with proper isolation and emergency procedures. Do not rely on a general extinguisher alone where lithium batteries are charged or stored.

Electric forklifts, cordless power tools, e-bikes and scooters, EVs and charging areas, solar battery storage and large energy storage systems. Anywhere batteries are charged in volume, the risk is higher.
