As more businesses install EV charging, a new fire-safety question comes with it. A charging area combines two risks: the electrical charging infrastructure, and the high-capacity lithium battery in the vehicle. They need different responses, and it pays to plan for both before the chargers go in.

Two risks in one place
The charging equipment is electrical (Class E): chargers, cabling, connectors and switchboards, subject to the usual electrical faults, wiring issues and equipment failures.
The vehicle battery is lithium-ion, and brings the thermal runaway risk, smoke, intense heat, fire and re-ignition, that a standard extinguisher cannot reliably stop.
What helps, and what does not
For the charging infrastructure, the usual electrical extinguishers apply: CO2 around the equipment (no residue), and ABE for general coverage. CO2 fire extinguishers · ABE fire extinguishers
For the vehicle battery in thermal runaway, be realistic: a portable extinguisher is not going to put it out. The priority is specialised lithium fire equipment where appropriate, isolation, and a clear emergency response plan (evacuate, call 000, let the fire service manage a battery in runaway).
