Where the risk sits
A data centre concentrates electrical load: server racks, storage arrays, network switches, UPS systems, backup power and battery storage, cooling plant and power distribution, all in one space. The common fire triggers are electrical faults (faulty wiring, damaged cables, loose connections, overloaded circuits), UPS systems generating heat under high-energy load, and battery failures (overheating, charging faults, internal faults).
Portable extinguishers alongside fixed systems
Larger facilities usually run sophisticated detection and clean-agent suppression systems. Portable extinguishers complement those, not replace them, giving staff a way to tackle a small fire early before it spreads or before the fixed system engages.
Which extinguisher for a data centre
- CO2 is the standard choice around live IT equipment: it leaves no residue, causes no water damage and needs minimal clean-up, so it does not write off the gear it is protecting. CO2 fire extinguishers
