Water Filled Barrier Buying Guide: Types, Sizes & FAQs

Choosing a water filled barrier starts with its intended job: temporary pedestrian delineation and worksite separation, or a tested vehicle restraint system. These are different applications, and not every plastic water filled barrier is crash rated.

Industro supplies water filled barriers for construction, roadworks and civil infrastructure. Use this guide to compare dimensions and features before requesting a project quote.

Measurements and weights come from the current product listings and should be checked against up-to-date manufacturer specifications before specification or installation. Weight when filled depends on the stated fill level.

Which water filled barrier is right for your project?

General civil construction and temporary work areas

Consider the Aqua Shield, Heavy Duty BC1000 or Economy Water Fillable Barrier when you need to define a work area or guide pedestrian routes. Compare the available footprint, handling weight and compatible accessories.

Projects that specify crash-tested barriers

Review the Shield I TL-1 system and obtain current manufacturer test reports, state-road-authority acceptance details, terminal specifications, minimum length and deflection requirements. A product's crash test does not automatically approve every site layout.

Screened work zones and branded barriers

The anti-gawk fence panel is an optional accessory for the Heavy Duty BC1000 barrier and can be combined with project-branded BannaMesh. Check stability, wind loading and any site-specific engineering requirements before fitting screens.

Frequently asked questions

Are all water filled barriers crash rated?

No. Many are designed to guide people or define areas, not to restrain vehicles in a collision. Only select a tested and appropriately accepted system when your traffic management design requires crash protection.

What is the difference between water filled barriers and crash-rated water barriers?

A standard water filled delineator creates a visible boundary. A crash-rated barrier system is tested for defined impact conditions and may require specific terminal units, lengths, ballast levels, connections, clearances and installation arrangements.

How heavy is a water filled barrier when full?

It depends on the model and its fill capacity. As listed, the Aqua Shield is approximately 20kg empty and 200kg filled; the Economy barrier is 12kg empty and about 150kg filled; the Heavy Duty BC1000 is 32kg empty and around 387kg filled. Always check the manufacturer's instructions.

Can water filled barriers be connected together?

Selected ranges use interlocking sections or pins, including Aqua Shield, the Economy barrier and Aqua Stop. Follow the applicable instructions for connecting sections and for the intended use.

Can water filled barriers carry fencing or anti-gawk screens?

Only where the product and accessory are designed to work together. The Heavy Duty BC1000 is offered with a compatible anti-gawk panel. A screen can increase wind loads, so confirm the required site controls.
