Danger signs explained: what they mean and when you need them
Danger signs occupy the highest tier of the Australian safety sign system. Under AS/NZS 1319, a danger sign communicates a single message: there is an immediate risk of death or serious injury in this area or on this piece of equipment. That is not a general warning — it is the most serious level of hazard communication the standard provides.

What a danger sign looks like
AS/NZS 1319 prescribes a specific appearance for danger signs that distinguishes them from every other sign category:
- Red oval containing the word DANGER in white text
- White upper panel with the specific hazard message in black text
- Black lower panel for additional instruction or information (optional)

If the hazard does not present an immediate risk of death or serious injury, a warning sign (yellow) may be more appropriate. Using danger signs for moderate hazards devalues the sign category and reduces the impact of genuine danger warnings.
Where to place danger signs
Placement follows two principles: visibility and proximity. A danger sign must be:
- Visible from the required legibility distance before a worker reaches the hazard (not at the hazard)
- Positioned at every access point to the hazard area, not just the primary entry
- At eye level where possible, or at a height appropriate for the viewing distance required
On complex sites with multiple access routes, every route that leads to the hazard must be signed. A single sign on the main entry is not sufficient if workers can approach from a loading dock, a back corridor, or an adjacent work area.
Environmental considerations for danger signs
Danger signs are often placed in the most hazardous areas of a site — which are frequently also the harshest environments for signage materials. Match the material to the environment:
- Chemical environments require aluminium signs with chemical-resistant inks, not standard vinyl or plastic
- High-temperature areas near furnaces or hot works require heat-rated materials
- Outdoor or exposed installations require UV-stable printing and weatherproof substrates
- Underground or low-light environments require reflective or photoluminescent signs
A faded or damaged danger sign in a high-hazard area is a liability, not a control measure.
The difference between danger and warning signs
This is the most common source of confusion on Australian worksites. The distinction matters:
- Danger (red) — immediate risk of death or serious injury
- Warning (yellow) — potential hazard that could cause injury or illness if not avoided
An unguarded saw blade that could cause amputation: danger. A wet floor where someone might slip: warning. A working electrical switchboard: danger. A pinch point on a conveyor with guarding in place: warning.
The test is immediacy and severity. If a worker who ignores the sign faces immediate life-threatening risk, it is a danger sign. If the risk requires a failure of additional controls, it is a warning sign.
